BENGALURU: The Congress government in the state is already facing a lot of criticism after the cabinet decision to withdraw criminal cases against AIMIM leaders who were accused in the Hubballi riots of 2022. Now, the BJP is accusing the government of moving to withdraw cases against the accused in the DJ Halli/KG Halli riots case too.

State BJP president R Ashoka alleged that some people have written to the government to withdraw these cases too. In the meantime, Home Minister G Parameshwara’s statement too has raised doubts after allegations made by Ashoka.

On Monday, speaking to reporters, Parameshwar said that if false cases have been filed, the government has an opportunity to check and withdraw them. He added that they will also check DJ Halli/KG Halli cases.

Senior Congress MLC B K Hariprasad had demanded the withdrawal of cases against the accused in the DJ Halli/KG Halli riots. He had urged the government to withdraw cases filed against innocent people, including students, in the riot case. Narasimharaja MLA Tanveer Sait too had written to the government in June 2023, requesting a review and withdrawal of false cases.

The Congress party is pressuring the government to withdraw the cases, following widespread outrage over the withdrawal of the Hubballi riot case. Now there is pressure on the government to withdraw the DJ Halli/KG Halli case as well from their own party leaders.

The withdrawal of the case has seen strong backlash from the opposition, with the BJP accusing the Congress of trying to appease the Muslims. There has already been widespread outrage over the withdrawal of the Hubballi riots case and if the government withdraws DJ Halli/KG Halli riot cases, it could paint itself into a corner.
