Two two-wheeler riders were injured after a part of Brigade Road caved in on Thursday.

BENGALURU: Just two days after a woman and her son were killed after the reinforcement cage of a Metro pillar collapsed on them, a portion of Brigade Road, where the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) is conducting tunneling work, caved in, leaving two persons on a two-wheeler injured.

One of the motorcycle riders who injured after a part of Brigade Road caved in on Thursday.

The BMRCL has taken up work on an underground section between Trinity Circle and Shivajinagar as part of the phase-2 project. On Thursday afternoon, a portion of Brigade Road suddenly caved in. After the two-wheeler riders suffered injuries, police arrived on the scene and blocked all traffic on Brigade Road. The site of cave-in has been barricaded and traffic was diverted towards Richmond Road.

The area was cordoned off and work in filling the cave-in site was taken up.

The traffic police insisted that they will not allow traffic on the road till the BMRCL authorities declare it safe for commute. The Metro authorities have taken up work to fill the cave-in.

A two-wheeler rider who was right behind the other two who fell.

A two-wheeler rider, who witnessed two other men fall at the spot, said, “There was normal traffic and I was coming from Shooley Circle. My office was just 100 metres away when I saw the two on a motorcycle fall suddenly. Initially, I thought they had hit a pothole. But they got back on their feet themselves and had sustained minor injuries on their hands and legs. When they fell, the cave-in was small and not deep, but as soon as they moved their two-wheeler a little distance away, the cave-in became deeper and wider. I just dread to think what would have happened if I were in their place”, he said.

Pavan said a depression had formed on the road in the morning.

Pavan, another witness, whose office is close by said, “In the morning, I had come out for a tea break when I saw a couple on a scooter hit a depression on the road and the woman’s helmet fell down. Several other vehicles which followed also hit the depression. By the time we came out for lunch, the depression had turned into a cave-in and two people had sustained injuries”.
