BENGALURU: After the gangrape was reported in KR Market, questions are now being raised about the safety of women in the city.
According to the Home Ministry’s statistics, Bengaluru tops in crime rate against women in the state, including rape and sexual harassment.
The statistics reveal a disturbing trend, with Bengaluru accounting for the highest number of crimes against women in the state. The State Home department has released statistics for 2023 and 2024, which highlight a significant rise in crimes against women in Bengaluru.
Rape, sexual harassment cases in Karnataka during 2023 and 2024:
In 2023, there were 563 rape cases reported across the state, with 178 in Bengaluru. As for sexual harassment, there were 6,462 cases reported in state, with 1,321 in Bengaluru.
In 2024 (until November), there were 540 rape cases in the state, with 166 in Bengaluru. As regards, sexual harassment, there were 5,873 cases reported in the state, with 1,381 in Bengaluru.
