BENGALURU: Given the increasing number of accidents on the city’s roads, Bengaluru has been ranked on top in the country on the Auto Accident Index. The city has recorded an accident rate of 44.8 per cent, mainly caused due to dangerous roads.

In comparison, Delhi had an accident rate of 13.3 per cent and Mumbai 12.3 per cent. The accident index says most of the accidents in Bengaluru were a result of potholed roads. Bommanahalli, which witnessed the highest number of accidents was identified as a high risk zone.

Among the reasons for roads accidents listed were drunk driving and violation of traffic rules. The report also said 62 per cent of the accidents were caused due to stray dogs and 29 per cent due to stray cows on the roads and 4 per cent due to buffaloes. Bengaluru ranking on the accident index is a telling commentary on the status of basic infrastructure in the city.
