KARWAR: A Bengaluru student died after drowning in the Arabian Sea of the Murudeshwara beach while another was rescued by lifeguards when they had gone for a swim, on Sunday morning. The deceased was identified as Gautham (17) while Dhanush D was rescued.
The two were part of a group of 220 students from Vidya Soudha PU College in Bengaluru who had gone on a picnic. Gautham and Dhanush had gone for a swim, but were swept away by the waves. Lifeguards and the police spotted Dhanush and he was rescued with the help of three boats of a privte firm which conducts adventure activities.
Dhanush did not reveal about Gautham also having joined him for a swim, but when a headcount of the students was taken, Gautham was found to be missing. Murudeshwar sub-inspector of police Rudresh, lifeguards and rescuers then launched a search for Gautham. Finally, the body was fished out from the water. A case has been registered at the Murudeshwar police station. Dhanush was treated at a hospital and is safe.
Following the incident and keeping in mind the weekend rush, the police prohibited tourists from getting into the sea. More police personnel were also deployed at the beach.
