BELAGAVI: Belagavi district has emerged on top in the state in implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). The scheme provides guaranteed employment to labourers for a fixed number of days in a year at fixed wages.
Women have been the biggest beneficiaries of the scheme in the district with work to the tune of Rs 61.41 lakh being provided in the last three months. The women labourers constituted 58.66 per cent of the 2.78 lakh workers.
The government had set a target of worth worth Rs 1.40 lakh, but the district administration has exceeded the target in the first three months of the financial year itself. Zilla panchayat CEO Harshal Bhoyar said more number of farmers and women opted for NREGS due to less rainfall in the last few months.
Among other districts, Raichur provided work worth Rs 58.37 lakh, Koppal Rs 57.37 lakh, Ballari Rs 49.19 lakh, Vijayanagar Rs 42.51 lakh.
