BELAGAVI: The Malmaruti police have busted a racket smuggling illicit liquor hidden under bags of waste and arrested the accused. The police seized around 900 boxes of illicit Goan liquor, worth over Rs 25 lakh from a goods vehicle.
The police, led by Police Inspector B R Gaddekar, conducted a raid based on a tip-off. The liquor was being transported from Goa to Maharashtra via Belagavi. The accused tried to evade detection by covering the liquor with waste material.
The police suspect that the liquor was meant for Maharashtra, possibly for election-related purposes. Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase praised the city police for their vigilance and the team involved in the raid has been rewarded with a cash prize.
“The driver did not have any documents of the 7,000 litres of liquor worth about Rs 25-26 lakh. We are investigating where the liquor was headed and from where. We will also look into how the vehicle managed to evade all the checkposts”, the police commissioner added.
