BENGALURU: In a big step towards Bengaluru development, the Karnataka government has issued a notification for the transition from Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) from May 15. The BBMP will cease to exist and GBA will take over the administration of Bengaluru.
The name of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike will be added to the pages of history after Wednesday. Henceforth, all the work of the corporation will be done in the name of the Greater Bengaluru Authority.

The GBA will be headed by the chief minister as its chairperson, and the Bengaluru development minister will serve as its vice-chairperson. All BBMP functions and activities will be transferred to the new authority, which will oversee city administration. The BBMP Chief Commissioner will also become the GBA Chief Commissioner.
The GBA Act 2024 will come into effect tomorrow, and the existing 225 wards of BBMP will initially be under its jurisdiction. More villages will be included in the GBA’s jurisdiction later.
The system is likely to be implemented in three phases: the GBA will oversee city-level functions, followed by municipalities, and then ward-level committees. The BBMP name will be phased out, and new boards with the Greater Bengaluru Authority name will be installed.
