BENGALURU: When it rains in Bengaluru, it’s a challenge to use the roads in the city due to waterlogging. People are frustrated with the situation following heavy rains Sunday night, many major roads and localities in Bengaluru resembled lakes.
Moreover, traffic police in city struggle to clear traffic in waterlogged areas. They take risks to clear blockages on roads, but it remains the same. Many of the policemen’s efforts, including clearing water on the road and filling potholes, have gone viral on social media.
Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivkumar, who visited the affected areas on Monday, warned the BBMP officials to take up measures to prevent waterlogging, especially by fixing the sewage system.
Taking the warning seriously, the BBMP has identified roads prone to waterlogging and assigned officials who will be responsible for ensuring that water does not accumulate on these roads. The BBMP has assigned officials from all departments, including revenue, food, finance, health department, and SWD, to manage the roads and take necessary measures.
Vikas Suralkar, BBMP special commissioner, said that underground drains (UGD) on service roads should be maintained well. “We have allotted lengths of road to each department officer to supervise assigned works. We have given charge to them. They must ensure taking up cleaning works of drainage systems and prevent waterlogging. They will be accountable to the assigned area”, he explained.
