BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Plaike (BBMP) has scrapped 45,000 job codes as several works worth thousands of crores have not been not executed in the city. The BBMP Finance Department has decided to take strict action after allegations of corruption.

After the BBMP Contractors Association complained about commission against BBMP officials, the civic body has  shocked the contractors by cancelling the job codes for all tenders. Even the job codes of contractors who were awarded tenders and had executed the work in the last five years have also been cancelled.

Works to the tune of Rs 8,000 crore have been put on hold and the contractors are now facing difficulties. Under the CM’s Amrita Nagarottana scheme, the Palike has cancelled all tenders that have not been completed. The Palike is also thinking of making changes to its tender bylaws to prevent misuse of job codes.

Tushar Giri Nath, BBMP Chief Commissioner

“About 45,000 job codes were issued from 2010 to 2021, and we will make changes to the system. We will approve a fresh action plan call for tenders. After the tender process, we will issue work orders. I do not know about past issues”, said BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath.

Jayaram Raipur, BBMP Special Commissioner of Finance Department.

“Many BBMP contractors accept job codes and complete some work when they are interested, and sometimes they sell the work to others when they are not. We have planned to save 1,000 job codes and the remaining over 45,000 job codes have been cancelled. Because of this, Rs 8,000 crore has been saved. Job codes that have not been called for tender have been frozen and some of them have been cancelled”, said Jayaram Raipur, BBMP Special Commissioner, Finance Department.
