BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has proposed a waste collection fee from households in Bengaluru. The proposal, submitted to the state government, suggests collecting a monthly fee of Rs 200-Rs 400 per household.
The BBMP is mulling over collecting garbage fee along with property tax. As per the proposal, there are 46 lakh households to be covered. The new fee structure will start in the 2025–26 financial year. The proposal includes door-to-door waste collection, transportation to collection centres and then to processing units.
Palike Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath said, “We have decided to impose a 12 per cent waste collection cess on bulk generators like hotels, apartments and commercial establishments. They must manage their own waste disposal. But collecting garbage is a burden now. We will be levying a cess until can they dispose of the garbage themselves or arrange for it. Some people are disposing of excess garbage after striking deals with the garbage collectors. We notified them last year, but received no response. For now, we won’t discuss household waste collection fees”, added.
