BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched a massive operation to evict illegal constructions in Bengaluru, particularly in the buffer zones of lakes.
The BBMP has identified several buildings constructed on stormwater drains, canals, rivers, and government lands and has decided to take action against them.
The exercise involves sending notices to the owners of these buildings, including under-construction buildings, followed by the disconnection of electricity supply. The BBMP has also planned to demolish these structures and restore the original stormwater drains and canals. The decision was taken at the ‘Commissioner’s Walk Towards the Zones’ programme held at Yelahanka.
The areas targeted by the BBMP include Yelahanka, Narasipura and other surrounding areas, where several buildings have been constructed on lake beds and government land. The BBMP has warned that it will take strict action against those who have violated building norms and encroached upon government land.
The operation is being carried out under the guidance of the Chief Commissioner, who has instructed all zonal officers to issue notice through the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) while the construction is still in progress, disconnect the power supply, and then take strict action against illegal constructions in their respective areas.
