BENGALURU: After a BBMP garbage truck claimed two lives in an accident on Sunday night, the civic body plans to replace the existing garbage trucks with new high-tech compactors to reduce traffic congestion and accidents caused due to these vehicles.
The new capsule trucks will have a capacity of 18 tons, which is three times the capacity of the existing trucks, and will be equipped with high-resolution CCTV cameras, speed governors and GPS. The BBMP is planning to purchase these trucks through a tender process.
This, the BBMP hopes, will reduce the number of garbage trucks on the road and help in faster garbage collection. Palike chief commissioner Tushar Giri Nath said that the new trucks will be more efficient. “We are planning to purchase these advanced trucks through a tender process. The new trucks will be equipped with the latest technology, including CCTV cameras, speed governors and GPS. This will help in monitoring the trucks and ensuring that they are operating efficiently”, he said.
The civic body is mulling over buying new vehicles with three times the capacity of the current trucks, which have a capacity of 6-7 tons of garbage. The new ones will have a capacity of 18 tons. With this, one truck will be enough for 2-3 wards. Similar capsule compactors are being used in Chennai and Hyderabad for garbage disposal.
