BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has swung into action after a Public TV report highlighting the plight of Indira Canteens operating in darkness as the electricity bills had not been paid.

Several Indira Canteens in Bengaluru were functioning without electricity, forcing customers to dine in candlelight. A Public TV report exposed the issue, terming it a “dark fate” (Katthale Bhagya) for the canteens.

Taking swift action, the BBMP assured Bescom (Bangalore Electricity Supply Company) of paying the pending bills within two months and electricity supply to the canteens has been restored.

Notably, the Majestic Indira Canteen’s electricity bill is Rs 8,340. The BBMP engineers are responsible for paying the electricity bills for each canteen. However, due to fund constraints, the bills remained unpaid.

Following the Public TV report, BBMP health inspectors personally visited the Indira Canteens to assess the situation.

With electricity restored, the canteens are now functioning normally. Besides Bescom, the West of Cord Road’s Rajkumar Ward Indira Canteen has also got power supply reinstated.

The swift response from the BBMP comes as a relief to the canteens, which were struggling to operate in the dark.
