BENGALURU: With a new government taking over, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) may may see its jurisdiction expand to include Greater Bengaluru areas along with the creation of more administrative zones.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is said to be considering a plan to improve governance in the city and the BBMP has been asked to submit a proposal to create four more zones to bring in more effective administration.
The civic body presently has eight zones — Bengaluru South, East and West, Bommanahalli, Mahadevapura, Dasarahalli, Yelahanka and RR Nagar. The four more zones that are proposed to be created are Jayanagar, Malleswaram, Gandhinagar and Vijayanagar.
In 2020, the BBMP Act was amended to create more ward and a provision was made to up to 250 wards. Likewise, there is a provision to increase the number of wards from eight to 15. During the term of the previous BJP government, a delimitation exercise was taken up to create 243 wards, up from the existing 198 wards.
Presently, the Bengaluru South zone has 44 wards, Bengaluru East 44, Bengaluru West 44, Bommanahalli 16, Mahadevapura 15, Yelahanka 11 RR Nagar 14 and Dasarahalli 10.
