BENGALURU: After the death of a person due to tree branches falling in the city, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials did not take any actions to prevent untoward incidents.
Similarly, a child is battling for life after a tree branch fell on him. Despite this, many old, dead trees and branches in the city, are hanging overhead, posing a threat to citizens.
Following the incident, Public TV conducted a reality check on December 22 in view of public interest. Dead trees and branches have been found in areas such as KG Road, Nrupathunga Road and Wilson Garden. The reality check has now prompted the BBMP to take action.
Following the report, the BBMP’s Forest cell special commissioner has instructed Deputy Conservators of Forests to launch a special drive to remove hazardous trees and trim branches in public space, parks and lakes across the city.
The special drive aims to identify and remove dead trees and dangerous branches. This initiative has brought relief to Bengaluru’s citizens.
An individual said, “We need trees, but the horticulture department should be attentive in these matters. It is not a big deal to remove trunks or branches. The department should take this as a drive. Once a week, the officials should visit each ward. Only then can BBMP prevent untoward incidents. A child died due to falling off a tree branch; it is not a casual thing. The BBMP should take this issue seriously”.
