BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is preparing to attach moveable properties of tax defaulters and has already drawn up a list of 20,000 people who have excessive dues.
The civic body had earlier announced a one-time settlement plan, but there were not many takers. Now, the BBMP plans to attach moveable properties of the defaulters. Under the one-time-settlement scheme, property tax defaulters could have settled their dues by paying up 50 per cent of the claims. They have time till July 31, but the BBMP is now going after the major defaulters.
Palike Special Commissioner Munish Moudgil said they will start with sealing commercial properties where taxes are due. “There are about 16,000-20,000 defaulters and about three lakh people have still not paid their property taxes. We will also consider attaching moveable properties of the major defaulters. There is only an extension of time to avail rebate on property tax”.
In the eight BBMP zones, there are 400 property tax defaulters and the civic body has prepared a list of 50 major defaulters and issued notices to them, but they have not settled the dues. Among the defaulters, there are 136 who owe more than Rs 1 crore with some having dues ranging between Rs 8 crore and Rs 15 crore. Hence, the BBMP now plans to attack moveable assets of the defaulters.
