MUMBAI: Electric vehicle fires are raising concerns about their safety . On March 26, 2022, a brand-new blue electric scooter parked on the side of the road caught fire in Pune. Another incident was in the early hours of March 26, 2022, where a father and daughter perished in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, after their electric scooter caught fire. On March 30, another electric scooter caught fire in Chennai.
Battery manufactures in India are trying hard to solve this burning issue of lithium-ion battery fires. The government probe also looked into fire incidents involving scooters built by Indian start-ups. Due to the above incidences, the government is enforcing provision of a safety mechanism, usage of fire protection products, changes in testing standards for batteries, battery management and cells due to growing concerns about safety issues as a result of previous fire occurrences.
