BENGALURU: Fried green peas, a popular snack in Karnataka, can be found being sold on streets in many cities and towns. The snack is made by deep-frying green peas in oil and seasoning them with spices.
However, there’s been suspicion about artificial colours being used in these snacks, and the issue has been brought to the attention of the Chief Minister’s office.
Street vendors in Karnataka sell fried green peas in small paper cones or bags. Vendors may also offer additional seasonings or chutneys to complement the snack.
A viral video has been circulating, claiming that hazardous artificial colors are being used in fried green peas. As a result, the Karnataka Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken this issue seriously and sent 70 samples of fried green peas from across the state for testing. If the reports confirm the presence of artificial colours, the department will ban the sale of these fried green peas and take legal action against the manufacturers.
The use of artificial colours in food can lead to serious health issues. The report on the samples is expected to be out soon, and action will be taken accordingly. It’s alarming to see how some businesses prioritize profits over consumer health and safety.
