A controversy has erupted over the adulteration of ghee used for preparing laddu prasadam at Tirupati Balaji temple.

KOLAR: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams board executive officer Shamala Rao on Tuesday said they will recommend for action against the private company which supplied adulterated ghee which had gone into the preparation of the laddu prasadam.

“The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has already issued a show-cause notice to the Tamil Nadu-based dairy. Earlier, we would not test the ghee for quality, but now, we will test any brand for quality”, he said.

The FSSAI has issued notice to AR Dairy and the temple authorities have permanently barred the private firm from supplying ghee. The famous Tirupati laddu was checked for quality of the ghee by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and four samples had been found to be adulterated.

The report from the NDDB lab in Gujarat was received in July itself, but Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu made the disclosure this month. He has also ordered an SIT to probe the adulteration.

Meanwhile, the TTD has made some changes in the preparation of the laddu prasadam. While earlier, each laddu weighed 86.62 gm, it will now be 100.20 gm and the S value will also be declared to maintain uniformity.
