BENGALURU: For the past week, servers at the sub-registrar offices have been affected with people struggling to register their properties and obtain ECs (Encumbrance Certificates). The Revenue Department has now approached the Cyber Crime police, suspecting foul play, possibly by cybercriminals.

People were running frompillar to post at sub-registrar offices without getting their property registered and without getting an EC. The entire Revenue Department’s work was stopped due to server issues, leading to suspicion of a DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attack.

The Cyber Crime Branch is investigating the matter. Its preliminary findings suggest:

  • A similar glitch occurred in December and February in the Kaveri 2.0 software.
  • Cybercriminals might have attacked the government portal.
  • Fake accounts were used to attack the database.
  • The attack on the database was made by cybercriminals.
  • Within a span of two hours, 6.2 lakh property registration requests were made using fake IDs, which is eight times the normal volume.
  • The entire system is now stagnant due to excessive load.

The Revenue department suspected that this might be a deliberate attack and has filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime police. The incident has also raised questions about the security of the system.
