BELAGAVI: Five cows belonging to Uma Sampagao were stolen from a shed in the farm in a pickup vehicle by unknown persons at Hooli village in Savadatti taluk on the night of January 7.
The thieves, who arrived in a pickup truck, stole four Jersey cows and a calf, leaving behind no trace. Dairy farming was the only source of income for Uma after the loss of her father and husband. The theft has left her in tears.
Footage from CCTV shows the thieves fleeing with the cows in a pickup vehicle. Uma has filed a complaint at the Savadatti police station, but even after a week, the police have failed to recover the stolen cows.
Despite Uma providing the CCTV footage to the police, they claimed that the pickup vehicle had no number plate and seemed to be neglecting the case. Uma suspects that the cows may have been taken to a slaughterhouse and is pleading with the authorities to find her five cows.
In an unrelated incident, three cows belonging to farmer Maruthi, died suddenly, at Mallapura village in Kudligi taluk of Vijayapura district. The farmer was dependent on the cows for his livelihood.
Kudligi MLA Dr N T Srinivas, who received information about the death of the cows, personally helped the farmer with some cash and also assured to get him compensation from the Animal Husbandry Department.
