BENGALURU: Three engineering students from Mysuru drowned in the swimming pool at a beach resort at Uchila in Mangaluru on Sunday. The victims were identified as Nishitha M D (21), Parvathi S (20), and Kirtana N (21).
The students checked into the resort on Saturday morning and decided to go for a swim around 8:30 am on Sunday. The swimming pool had a depth of six feet on one side. While the three friends were playing in the pool, one of them accidentally slipped into the deeper end and drowned. The other two, who tried to rescue her, also drowned.
The incident was recorded on an iPhone, which was kept at a distance to capture the swimming. The video shows the students were wading, walking in the pool and dipping underwater in the beginning. One of the students accidentally slipped into the six-foot deeper end, followed by the other two drowning while trying to rescue her.
The bodies have been recovered and handed over to the families. The Ullal police visited the resort and have registered a case.
Mangaluru Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal briefing the media about the incident, said the drowning of three engineering students the students, who didn’t know swimming, entered the pool when there were no glifeguards present. No depth signs were displayed, he added.
Police took resort owner Manohar’s son into custody for questioning, citing negligence in adhering to safety protocols as the cause of the drowning incident. The beach resort’s permission has been temporarily cancelled, and it has been sealed until the investigation is completed.
