Assistant sub-inspector of police Naabhiraj succumbed to injuries on Sunday morning at KIMS hospital.

HUBBALLI: An assistant sub-inspector of police, who had sustained serious injuries after an iron pipe fell on him from an under-construction flyover, succumbed to his injuries at the KIMS Hospital here. The deceased is Naabhiraj J Dayannavar.

The ASI was attached to the Hubballi suburban police station and was to retire in 10 months. On September 10, when he was passing near the under-construction flyover at Court Circle, an iron pipe fell on him, leaving him seriously injured. Following his death, his family donated his cornea. The last rites were held at the Sattur crematorium in Dharwad.

Police Commissioner N Shashikumar visited the hospital and offered his condolences to the family. Later, speaking to the media, he said the police and district administration had made all efforts to save Naabhiraj. “A case has been registered at the Suburban police station against 19 people including the contractor and NHAI officials. We have taken the case very seriously”, he said.

The flyover is being built at a cost of RS 320 crore. Abhinandan, a relative of Naabhiraj, held the NHAI officials directly responsible for his death and demanded strict action against them. “Even 4-5 days after the incident, the contractor didn’t even pay a courtesy visit in hospital. Even now, the NHAI officials didn’t visit the family. Those responsible for the poor quality work should be punished and justice ensure for Naabhiraj”, he said.
