BENGALURU: A woman and her twin sons ended their lives by setting themselves on fire Bengaluru’s JP Nagar Phase-III, allegedly due to harassment by money lenders.
The deceased have been identified as Sukanya (58), a native of Udupi, Ambalapadi, and her 28-year-old twin sons Nikhit and Nischit.
The woman gave newspapers and milk to her husband in the morning, then she committed suicide along with her children, by setting themselves on fire after locking themselves inside a room.
Sukanya’s husband Jayanand was running a factory, but they had closed it due to losses during Covid. As Jayanand had incurred a lot of debt, Sukanya used to teach children at home to earn some money.
Jayanand fell ill due to a loss of business and is at home. One of the two children, Nischit, was working from home.
Nikhit was at home for the last four to five months as he was unemployed. Borrowers used to frequently visit their house for recovery of loans. The family had been living in the same rental house for fifteen years. The family has been struggling to pay the rent for the past few months.
On Tuesday, the bank staff came to the house and pressured them to pay the loan. Distressed by the torture, the woman and her children took the extreme step, police said.
