BENGALURU: It’s a no-brainer that many government schools across the state lack basic facilities and the there are questions over the quality of education. Right in the state’s capital, students of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) higher primary school at Neelasandra are studying in pathetic conditions as the civic body has taken up renovation work at the school. The school has about 270 students.

Students can be sitting on the dusty floors in at the BBMP higher primary school in Neelasandra.

The school has no proper washrooms, drinking water facility, benches or desks. Students of different classes are crammed in one classroom and classes are conduced while the students sit on the dusty floors. For the last eight months the classrooms are filled with cement bags and cement blocks.

With construction work crawling at a snail’s pace and no washrooms, girl students have to rush back to their houses, while the boys relieve themselves nearby.

Students Asiya and Mohammed Faiz claimed that there are no proper facilities as renovation work is going on in the school.

“We are finding it difficult to sit in the classroom as it is full of dust. We have to go back to our houses to use the washroom. I request the authorities to complete the construction work at the earliest”, said Asiya.

Mohammed Faiz says, “There is no water supply in the school. Construction work is going on all the time and we cannot even concentrate on our studies”.

Teacher Manjunath says additional classrooms and an auditorium are being constructed.

Manjunath, a teacher at the school, said, “The classrooms were very small to accommodate the students and there was a shortage of toilets. As we requested the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the construction work is going on since last eight months. As there was no separate space for conducting programmes, an audiroum is being built on the second floor. The BBMP had started off the work, but now it is going on slowly. I agree that students are facing trouble in the under-construction building. We asked the BBMP to make alternative arrangements till the construction work is completed, but they did not. We did not find any other place to arrange classes, so we managing in the same building for now”.
