Heavy rain uproots trees across Bengaluru, multiple roads blocked

BENGALURU: Just one rain and Bengaluru is in disarray, prompting many citizens to remark that this is not Greater Bengaluru, but ‘gutter Bengaluru’. Crores were spent on cleaning drains, but it has been of no use as just one hour of rain exposed GBA’s claims. The city has witnessed a string of mishaps and dry trees in the city have not been cleared.

Wednesday’s rain caused many large trees to fall in most areas of Bengaluru. A large tree fell in Padmanabhanagar, snapping three to four electricity poles with its impact. With the tree blocking the road, people were seen struggling.

A massive tree had fallen across the road, shutting Sankey Tank to Cauvery Theatre Road. Traffic at Cauvery Junction was closed with traffic police haing barricaded the road. This is a key route connecting Vidhana Soudha, Chalukya Circle and Vasanthnagar.

On JC Nagar Main Road, rows of tree branches had fallen to the ground on the route from Mekhri Circle towards JC Nagar. More than five tree branches had fallen, blocking the footpath and road. A large tree had fallen on the service road near the railway track in Milk Colony. The tree is next to the railway track and fell with its roots on the service road after yesterday’s heavy rain. The road was completely closed.

A huge tree, half broken and hanging, has closed the road in Sadashivanagar. The incident occurred on the road next to Deputy CM D K Shivakumar’s residence, on 8th Main, 8th Stage, Sadashivanagar. Traffic police had barricaded and closed the road.

A tree branch fell and completely damaged a house compound on Jayamahal 2nd Main Road. The tree was on the road in front of the house. The branch was resting on the compound, and the gate and roof have also been damaged while window glass is shattered.

A tree has fallen on Jayamahal Main Road, blocking half the road. Vehicles were moving through a small gap. A tree branch fell on a moving car on Jayamahal 3rd Main Road and the front of the car was completely damaged. The driver and passenger got out of the car as soon as the branch fell. If the car had moved one foot forward, the people inside would have been in danger. The driver has since left the car at the spot.

A tree fell on the road from Yeshwanthpur towards Malleshwaram. Tree branches fell on the footpath and road. No damage was reported. A tree fell on an Innova car, damaging the car and two bikes in Basavanagudi. The tree fell on the vehicles and the road, causing distress to motorists. A tree fell on a Thar. The tree fell on a moving Thar, slightly damaging the front. The driver panicked when the tree fell.

A large coconut tree was uprooted by yesterday’s severe rain. The fall damaged a bike parked in front of a house. The incident occurred in front of Warrior Bakery in Rajajinagar. The house wall was damaged and the coconut tree fell inside the park. A power pole was also damaged. Power to the entire area had been cut due to the damaged pole.

A large tree fell on Sheshadripuram Road due to the rain. Cables were cut due to the impact of the fall.  A tree fell on Kumar Park Road, landing on a car and damaging it. The driver in the car had a narrow escape. A tree fell on Vyalikaval Road, landing on a panipuri cart and an auto. The cart and auto were damaged.

Tree branches also fell on an electricity pole. Fortunately, there were no casualties. A huge tree has fallen near Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna Station, completely damaging four high-end cars. The incident occurred in the railway station parking lot. The tree was uprooted along with its roots. Car owners had come to drop family members and passengers at the railway station.

In South Bengaluru City Corporation, 26 trees fell due to yesterday’s rain, and 95 branches broke. Of the 26 trees, 16 have been cleared, with 10 remaining. 46 branches are yet to be cleared. Yesterday’s heavy rain in Bengaluru uprooted 226 trees and 623 branches.

As per the GBA data, 226 trees fell and 623 branches broke across five city corporations.

  • Central City Corporation: 70 trees and 131 branches
  • East City Corporation: 1 tree, 4 branches
  • West City Corporation: 101 trees and 313 branches
  • South City Corporation: 26 trees and 95 branches
  • North City Corporation: 28 trees and 80 branches
