BELAGAVI: A woman and her newborn baby girl died at the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS), leading to allegations of medical negligence against the hospital.

Eramma (28), a resident of Turumuri village in Belagavi taluk, was admitted to the hospital on April 10 for delivery. She was suffering from acid reflux and high blood pressure, according to her family members. However, despite treatment, Eramma’s condition deteriorated, and she passed away.

The family alleged that the hospital’s negligence led to her death and that of her baby girl.”The doctors didn’t provide proper care, and they didn’t monitor her condition regularly,” said a family member, visibly distraught. “We demand an investigation into the matter and action against the responsible doctors”.

However, the hospital authorities have denied any negligence, attributing Eramma’s death to pulmonary edema, a condition where fluid accumulates in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. “Eramma had a severe case of pulmonary edema, and her lungs were filled with water,” said Vasanta Kabbur, HoD, labour and delivery. “Her mother was present during the delivery, and we did everything possible to save her. Unfortunately, her condition was too critical”, she added.

The incident has sparked outrage among the local community, with many demanding action against the hospital and the doctors involved. Eramma’s family is grief-stricken, having lost a loved one and a newborn baby girl.
