CHIKKAMAGALUR: In a heart-wrenching incident in Banakal village in the district, a 77-year-old man, identified as
Cyril Monis, died 10 days ago, and his mentally unstable wife remained beside his decomposing body all through.
The couple’s son, who works in Bengaluru, would regularly call his mother, who would say his father was fine. The son had visited recently, but didn’t notice anything amiss. It was only when neighbours reported a foul smell that the
body was discovered.
When police arrived, the wife was clinging to the body, refusing to let go, saying “My husband is still here, don’t take him away”. The body had decomposed significantly, and locals were reluctant to approach it. Social worker Arif helped take the body for post-mortem, and it waslater cremated at the Bankal Christian cemetery.
The son arrived on Wednesday evening, but it was too late to see his father’s face. The daughter is in Dubai and couldn’t make it. The incident has left the village in shock, with many mourning the tragic circumstances.
