BENGALURU: The BMTC has imposed fines of Rs 25 crore on companies operating electric bus in the city for violating rules and regulations, and for the increasing number of accidents involving these buses.
The companies, which operate 1500 electric buses, have been fined for traffic rule violations and maintenance issues. The BMTC has taken this step after repeated warnings and violations by the companies. The fines are for issues such as mobile phone usage by drivers, battery problems and maintenance issues.
The fines are as follows:
NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Mobility Rs 9 crore (Rs 91 lakhs in 2023-24, Rs 6.38 crore in 2024-25, and Rs 2.51 crore up to September 2025); Switch Mobility Automotive Ltd Mobility Rs 3.05 crore (Rs 76 lakh in 2023-24, Rs 1.63 crore in 2024-25, and Rs 65 lakh up to September 2025; TML Smart City Mobility Solutions Ltd Mobility Rs 11.90 crore (Rs 45.96 lakhs in 2023-24, Rs 8.24 crore in 2024-25, and Rs 3.28 crore up to September 2025); OHM Global Mobility Pvt Ltd — Rs 67.25 lakh (Rs 7.65 lakh in 2024-25 and Rs 59.60 lakh up to September 2025.
Additionally, the BMTC has issued an order banning drivers from using mobile phones while operating electric buses, following a rise in accidents involving these vehicles. The order also prohibits the use of digital gadgets like Bluetooth and earphones, and bans activities like listening to music, audio, or chatting.
Drivers found using mobile phones will face serious action, and conductors are required to inform their superiors if they notice drivers using phones, earphones, or Bluetooth devices. If drivers or conductors violate these rules, they will face disciplinary action.
The BMTC’s Security and Awareness Director has issued a circular to all depot managers, instructing them to inform drivers and conductors about these new rules. The move aims to reduce accidents and ensure safe transportation for passengers.
