BENGALURU: In a unique move aimed at curbing littering in public and to spread awareness about cleanliness, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) dumped garbage in front of the houses of people who were found littering on Dattatreya Temple Road in Banashankari 2nd Stage.

The GBA team, along with Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd, dumped garbage in front of the houses of those who were littering on the road instead of handing over the waste to the garbage collection autorickshaw tippers.

The GBA staff had been observing that people were littering on the road, and despite repeated requests, they were not stopping. As a result, the civic body staff decided to take a different approach. They started dumping garbage in front of the houses of those who were littering, with a fine of Rs 100 imposed on them.

Several locals welcomed the initiative. “The garbage autos come daily between 5.30 am and 7 am, but some residents don’t segregate the waste and dump it by the roadside. The residents even refused to pay up the fine. This is a good initiative by the GBA”, said one resident.

“Though facilities have been provided for door-to-door collection of garbage, some people still dump garbage. Such an initiative will hopefully deter people from dumping garbage on the roads. People should learn a lesson and cooperate with the GBA authorities in waste management”, said another resident.
