BALLARI; The Vijayanagara police have busted a gang of six people who allegedly murdered a man and faked an accident to claim insurance money. The gang, which included a woman who posed as the victim’s wife, has been arrested by the Hosapete police.

The gang killed a man, identified as Gangadhar K (35) and staged an accident to claim insurance money amounting to Rs 5.25 crore. The police investigation revealed that the gang had taken out insurance policies on the victim’s life and had planned the murder to claim the insurance payout.

The gang had allegedly planned the murder in such a way that it would look like an accident. However, the police were able to crack the case by analyzing the evidence and following up on clues. The police are now investigating whether the gang was involved in any other similar crimes.

Superintendent of Police Janhavi said, “The police received information about a hit-and-run accident. The deceased was identified as Gangadhar (35), a resident of Jeeraganur in Kampli taluk. His wife Sharadamma, a resident of Cowlpet in Hosapete, lodged a complaint. They had been married for the last six years and haradamma said Gangadhar had suffered a stroke three years ago and had no two-wheeler”.

“After she expressed doubts over the hit-and-run accident been staged, we registered a murder case and formed three teams. Six people have been arrested in the case. One of the accused works with Axis Bank and the gang would get in touch with people who are of poor health and take out insurance policies on their names. They would then claim the insurance upon the death of the person and share it among themselves”, the SP said.
