BENGALURU: Amid the controversy over the installation of smart meters for electricity connections, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has also decided to install smart meters for water connections in the city.
The water board has contended that there is a 5 per cent discrepancy in the actual usage and the readings shown in the mechanical meters and plans to install smart meters on a trial basis at places where there is bulk consumption of water.
The BWSSB is already preparing to call for tenders for installation of smart meters and is awaiting approval for the proposal from the government. In the initial stages, the smart meters will be installed at places where there is bulk water usage, like apartments, factories, commercial establishments, IT-BT parks, HAL, BHEL, Air Force facilities, etc.
The contention of the BWSSB is that there will be no discrepancy with the use of smart meters as the readings will be accurate and consumers will also get a clear picture of how much water they are using, it said.
