RAMANAGARA: A man who had been arrested in connection with a theft at a temple committed suicide in the toilet of the MK Doddi police station in the early hours on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Ramesh and the case has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Ramesh had been arrested along with Manu and another individual, Anil of Kolar, in connection with a theft at a temple at Bommanayakanahalli in Channapatna taluk. After producing them before a court, the police had taken custody of the accused for two days for investigation.
The accused were to be produced before a court on Wednesday, but Ramesh committed suicide by hanging in the toilet of the MK Doddi polie station. He was immediately rushed to the taluk hospital in Channapatna, but did not survive. His family has alleged custodial death and refused to accept the body till justice is delivered.
Mandya Police Superintendent Srinivas Gowda said in Channapatna, “Ramesh was arrested in a theft case and the police had taken custody of him for two days. He was to be produced before the court on Wednesday, but attempted suicide in the early morning. He was rushed to hospital, but did not survive”.
“There were previous cases against him, but we don’t know what drove him to attempt suicide. The case has been transferred to the CID. The staff at the MK Doddi police station are also being questioned and the Deputy SP has been asked to file a report”, he added.
