HASSAN: A 25-year-old man, who was to celebrate his birthday on Saturday, died while his friend sustained grievous injuries after they were flung into a huge pit, dug up for construction work, on the national highway in Holenarsipur in the wee hours on Saturday.

While K G Dhanuj was impaled by steel rods and died on the spot, his friend Sumanth, who was riding the motorcycle, sustained serious injuries and has been hospitalised. The motorcycle hit some debris dug up for the highway construction work.

The motorcycle was lying on a heap of mud which had been dug up.

Dhanuj and Sumanth had gone to Lakkur village on Friday to distribute sweets to some relatives in view of his birthday. When they were returning around 1.30 am, they met with an accident near the Kanaka Bhavan where highway construction work is going on.

Shockingly, no warning signs or barricades have been put up at the construction site by the National Highways Authority of India. The Holenarsipur Town police visited the spot and have registered a case.
