RAICHUR: A newly-married man survived miraculously after he fell into the gushing waters of the Krishna river from the Gurjapura bridge-cum-barrage. While he alleged that his wife pushed him off the bridge, she claimed that he had lost his footing and fell into the river.

Tathappa, a resident of Shakti Nagar in Raichur, got married to Gaddemma, who hails from Vadagera in Yadgir district, on April 10. On Friday, he was bringing his wife back home from her hometown when they stopped on the barrage to click pictures.

Tathappa fell into the water and was swept downstream in the strong currents for a little distance where he climbed on some rocks. All the while, his wife was standing on the bridge watching unmoved, giving rise to suspicion.

Luckily for Tathappa, some employees of the Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Ltd (KBJNL) came by the same road in a Mahindra Bolero SUV. Along with some other passersby, they threw a long rope into the river and pulled Tathappa to safety.

In videos of the rescue, Tathappa can be heard yelling to his rescuers, “Help me bro… Don’t let her escape bro… She pushed me into the river…Please call someone…” After he was pulled out of the water, he told his rescuers that his wife had betrayed his faith. “I said we’ll take a selfie, but she refused. While taking pictures of me, she pushed me into the water. There are pictures on my phone”.

The rescuers can also be heard telling Tathappa not to beat his wife. His family members have now lodged a complaint and the police have taken up investigation.
