CHAMARAJANAGAR: Close on the heels of the killing of a tigress and her four cubs in the Hoogyam range of the Male Mahadeshwara Hills wildlife sanctuary, over 20 monkeys were found dead in Chamarajanagar with suspicions of poisoning.
The Forest department has taken the carcasses for post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. There are allegations of poachers being involved in the incident. The incident has sparked outrage among locals, who are demanding action against those responsible.
This comes on the heels of an incident in the district where 5 tigers were found poisoned to death in MM Hills. The tiger deaths had triggered widespread condemnation and demands for action against the perpetrators. The case is currently under investigation.
Shivamurthy, a local resident said, “The mass killing of monkeys has not happened in our area. Someone from another village did this and dumped the carcasses on the highway here. We did not have monkey menace, we worship them like god. The Forest department should initiate legal action against culprits. This is very inhuman and God will punish the culprits”.
