MANGALURU: Two people, including, a NSUI activist, were killed in a high speed car accident while three others were seriously injured on National Highway-66 here on the night of June 17. It is said that the car was travelling at 192 kmph and that the occupants were drunk when the accident occurred.
The deceased include Dakshina Kannada NSUI vice president Omshri Poojari and Kadri resident Aman Rao while the injured are Vamshi, Ashiq and Italian national Jerry. The car had hit a parapet wall and was completely crushed due to the impact. The injured are being treated at a private hospital in the city.
According to the police, the five occupants of the car had consumed alcohol and were heading from Talapady to Mangaluru at high speed when the accident occurred. Footage from CCTV and the mobile phones of the car occupants established that the car was travelling at 192 kmph. A case has been registered at the South traffic police station.
Police Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Reddy said, “So far this year, 75 people have died in road accidents in Mangaluru. Our analysis shows that 70 of these cases involved rash and negligent driving. Most of the victims are less than 25 or 30 years of age and hence we request parents to ensure that their wards do not drive negligently”.
“This year, four deaths have occurred due to alcohol consumption. Motorists should not drive rashly, not consume alcohol and should follow traffic rules”, the police commissioner added.
