MANDYA: A woman committed suicide by hanging three weeks after her daughter ended her life by coming under a train at the Mandya railway station. The daughter had ended her life on February 21 after she was dumped by her boyfriend. The police have now arrested five people in connection with the deaths.
Vijayalakshmi, who hailed from Hebbakavadi village, was working in a private hospital in Mandya after completing her degree course. While she was studying, she got into a relationship with Harikrishna of the neighbouring Marasinganahalli over the last one-and-half years.
Recently, Vijayalakshmi came to know that Harikrishna was in touch with other women and questioned him about it. She also insisted that they get married. However, Harikrishna refused and abused Vijayalakshmi. On February 21, she ended her life by coming under a train. Initially, the Railway Police had registered a case of unnatural death, but evidence from Vijayalakshmi’s phone and her friend’s statement revealed about the relationship.
Police Superintendent Mallikarjun Baladandi said that after Vijayalakshmi’s death, the family had registered a complaint at the Mandya Rural police station and had gone to Harikrishna’s house to demand justice where they created a ruckus. Following this, a case was registered against Vijayalakshmi’s family and some villagers, the SP said.
Upset over the developments, Vijayalakshmi’s mother Lakshmi ended her life by hanging at her house and left behind a death note. Angered by the deaths, the villagers refused to cremate Lakshmi’s body and took the police to task. Finally, the police registered a case against Harikrishna’s family members and arrested five people, but Harikrishna is absconding.
