BENGALURU: Electronics City is known for its traffic congestion and also the highest number of traffic violations. According to TomTom, a Netherlands-based global provider of navigation, Bengaluru has the worst traffic in any country in the world. Now, it look like the city has set a record in collection of fines for traffic violations too.
According to data from the Bengaluru traffic police, 96 lakh cases of traffic violation were registered in 11 months of this year in Bengaluru. Officials expect that it may touch one crore cases by this year-end. Last year, a total of 93 lakh cases were registered.
In the last 11 months, the police have recovered Rs 164 crore in fines. A staggering number of over 30,000 traffic violation cases are registered in Bengaluru every day. For vehicle owners who have pending dues even after notices were sent to them, the police are working on plans to recover it when they go for renewal of insurance, or else insurance cover will be denied.
M A Salim, Special Commissioner, Traffic, said, “We are imposing fines through an automated challaning system. It is transparent and accurate and violations are caught on camera following which vehicle owners will receive a notice. In a few cases, people do not pay up the fines. We are working with insurance companies to let them know how many traffic violation cases are pending against a particular vehicle and we will recover the fines during renewal of insurance.”
