BENGALURU: Animal birth control (ABC) has been carried out on 71.85 per cent of the 2.79 lakh street dogs in the city, according to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) latest findings. In 2019, 52.16 per cent of the 3.10 lakh street dogs had been neutered.
Announcing the findings at the BBMP headquarters today, Special Commissioner (Health) Thrilok Chandra said 50 teams of 100 surveyors, under the leadership of 15 supervisors, conducted the survey over 12 days. In all the eight zones combined, there are 2,75, 335 street dogs, as per the survey, he said.

“There are 1.4 crore people living in the BBMP limits and preventing rabies and dog bite cases is very important in the interest of public health. Hence, the survey of street dogs was carried out. We have been able to study the effect of stray dogs zone-wise and ward-wise. The entire team worked with the cooperation of the animal husbandry department to ensure the success of the exercise”, he said.
The officer said drone technology was also used and the help of some drone startups and IISc was taken for the purpose of the survey. “The drones were used for the survey in areas around four lakes”, Thrilok Chandra said.
