41 students of Kolar pvt college taken ill after consuming onion dosa for dinner at hostel

KOLAR: Forty one students of a private college here were hospitalised after consuming onion dosa at the college hostel on Tuesday night. The hostel has 61 inmates and district officials visited the facility on Wednesday morning to collect food and water samples.

The students had consumed onion dosa with chutney and potato sagoo for dinner at the Vidya Jyothi College hostel at Basavanatha on the outskirts of Kolar. Around 3 am on Wednesday, many students started complaining of vomiting and diarrhoea. They were rushed to the district hospital.

The students told the officials that they started vomiting in the night itself but assumed that it was happening only to them. Around 9 am on Wednesday, 41 of the students reported sick and were shifted to the district hospital. According to the doctors, some of the girl students are in a more serious condition as they had panicked.

Kolar tahsildar Nayana, district surgeon Jagadish, Food and Civil Supplies department official Rakesh, PU department deputy director Manjula, police and other officials met the college principal and collected details. They also questioned the catering contractor Srinath who was reportedly operating without any permits. The police have detained him for further questioning.

On coming to know about the food poisoning, parents rushed to the hospital. They alleged that though complaints were raised earlier about the quality of food, no action was taken. The students will be kept in the hospital under observation for a day, doctors said.
