BENGALURU: Robberies on both national and state highways has been rising steadily in the state. A total of 403 robbery and extortion cases have been recorded in the past three years as per official records, underscoring the growing threat to motorists.

Even drivers who are cautious cannot guarantee safety; travelling in a private car does not eliminate the risk of being targeted. If a drier lost an alert, it would be a risk for life. Police stations along the highways have set up checkposts have been set up where officers inspect suspicious persons and vehicles to curb the crime.

Nighttime patrols have been strengthened: each station has been allocated two‑wheelers from the government, and patrol vehicles are equipped with sirens and flashing lights. In addition, a 24‑hour, three‑shift, 112‑patrol system has been deployed to keep the roads under constant surveillance.

As part of security measures, those previously involved in robbery, extortion and other property crimes have been issued ‘MOB’ (Modus Operandi Bureau) cards. They are subjected to surprise checks and their activities are closely monitored.

Regular border‑crime meetings are held, and information about suspects is shared among neighboring states, districts, and police stations. CCTV cameras installed at toll plazas are reviewed periodically, and night beat officers are required to carry ammunition at all times.

Despite these measures, the number of incidents remains high. The breakdown for national highways is:

  • 2023: 81 extortion and 23 robbery cases
  • 2024: 66 extortion and 16 robbery cases
  • 2025 (up to 15 Nov): 51 extortion and 14 robbery cases

For state highways, the figures are:

  • 2023: 39 extortion, 17 robbery cases
  • 2024: 35 extortion, 22 robbery cases
  • 2025: 20 extortion cases and 19 robbery cases

The police continue to urge the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activity on the highways.
