38 deaths so far in Metro construction accidents, CM informs Council

BENGALURU: A total of 38 workers have died so far during Namma Metro construction works and a total of Rs 3.15 crore has been paid out as compensation, according to the government.

In a written reply to Legislative Council member T A Saravana who had posed an unstarred question on Metro accidents and how much compensation has been paid, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai stated 50 workers were involved in Metro accidents so far of whom 38 have died. The CM also said that the contractors responsible have been fined Rs 1.77 crore and three BMRCL engineers have been suspended so far.

The CM also stated that as a precautionary measure to prevent accidents at Metro work sites, a SHE (safety, health and environment) manual has been incorporated in all the agreements and contractors are supposed to compulsorily follow it to ensure zero injuries to workers, zero reportable environmental damage, hiring workers as per the guidelines and carrying out investigation and inspection as per the manual.
