MANGALURU: Three people of a family died while three others survived after their house collapsed following a landslide at Montepadavu Kodi in Deralakatte on the outskirts of Mangaluru on Friday.

The deceased are Prema Poojary (60), her grandchildren Aryan (2.5) and Arush (1) while her husband Kanthappa Poojary (65), son Sitaram Poojary and daughter-in-law Ashwini (31) survived. Dramatic scenes were witnessed during the rescue with Ashwini and her two children buried under the debris.

Ashwini and her two children were trapped under concrete.

The landslide brought down the house around 4.30 am on Friday, trapping the family. Only Sitaram Poojary was able to come out of the house and he immediately informed the gram panchayat member, who, in turn, alerted the SDRF and the NDRF.

In the meantime, locals rushed to rescue the family and managed to pull out Kanthappa Poojary. He had sustained serious injuries on his legs and was shifted to a hospital. Some local doctors also ensured water and oxygen to those who were trapped under the debris.

The rescuers, including the Fire and Emergency Services, SDRF and NDRF personnel pulled out the children and rushed them to a hospital, but they did not survive. While Prema Poojary died under the debris, Ashwini miraculously survived and was rushed to hospital. National Disaster Response Force official Shantilal commended the locals and all the other personnel for the rescue effort.

In another incident, a 10-year-old girl died after a compound wall fell on a house at Kanekere in Deralakatte on Friday. The deceased was identified as Nayeema, daughter of Naushad.

The compound wall collapsed on the rear wall of the house, bringing debris along with it. A window in the house fell on Nayeema, leaving her seriously injured. She was rushed to a hospital, but did not survive.
