BENGALURU: A 25-year-old woman from Assam was successfully treated after doctors at the United Hospital in Jayanagar dissolved a 25-mm kidney stone without surgery.
Pobi Roy from Assam, was suffering from an artial septal defect (heart disease) from birth, but she learnt about the disease only when she was 21 years old. At the same time, doctors discovered that she was suffering from a critical kidney stone.
For the past four years, Pobi Roy and her mother went to several hospitals to seek treatment, but many hospitals refused to give her treatment as she was suffering from a heart disease. As a last option, they came to United Hospitals, where doctors took the risk and treated her. Without surgery, they dissolved her 25-mm kidney stone with laser treatment and cured her.
“In the beginning, when I came across the case, I had second thoughts about whether to go for it or not, and then I asked experts for suggestions. We were confident enough to opt for the non-surgical method to dissolve the kidney stone. It was challenging because she was suffering from a heart disease. I consulted Dr Sagar and he suggested going for IV sedation. We had the patient’s cooperation and consent to do it. The treatment through medicine and surgery was not possible, and the only way to do it was through a non-surgical method. The case was very risky “, said Dr Rajeev Shetty, senior consultant urologist at United Hospital.
“When Pobi Roy was 21 years old, she discovered she had a heart disease. She had no symptoms even when she was involved in physical activities. She had an arterio-septal defect, which was essentially a hole in her heart. When she was examined, it was found that she was suffering from kidney disease, but no one took the risk of treating her because of her heart problems. They contacted her cousin and brother for assistance in finding a hospital, and they came here for the treatment. We re-examined the heart disease, and then we planned to opt for a non-surgical method by giving IV sedation. We monitored her vital parameters, and we are happy to find success in such a rare case”, Dr Sagar Srinivas, Anaesthesia and critical care specialist.
“I was suffering from heart disease and had a 25-mm kidney stone. I went to several doctors for the treatment, but no one agreed to treat me because it was risky to do surgery. My cousin suggested that we come down to Bengaluru for the treatment. Dr Rajeev suggested that treatment was possible. After the surgery at United Hospital, I am now cured”, said Pobi Roy.
