BENGALURU: A total 242 cases of female foeticides and gender selective abortions were reported in just three months at a jaggery unit in Mandya, said City Police Commissioner B Dayananda on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference, the commissioner said the police have discovered a network involved in female foeticides. The accused’s car left without stopping at the checkpost when they were checking vehicles on October 15. The incident came to light when the police apprehended and interrogated them. The gang is involved in female foeticides and so far, nine accused have been arrested, including two doctors, three lab technicians and agents. All of them are from Mysuru and Mandya, he clarified.
“Female foeticide was found to be conducted at a jaggery unit in Mandya. The gang used to charge Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 for infanticide per person and for gender detection. The gang used to deal in packages totaling Rs 60,000, including gender detection and foeticides. We are continuing the investigation and two more agents are to be arrested. More information will be revealed after their arrest”, the police chief said.
The commissioner said the accused had admitted that a total 242 foetuses were killed in three months, and they have been doing this crime for two years. “At least 1,000 fetuses were killed in a year. It is suspected that 2,000 fetuses were killed in two years and it is possible that the number could reach 3,000. This has been going on for three years”, Dayananda said.
