BENGALURU: Nineteen of the schools run by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) are in a pitiable condition and need urgent attention. Of these, 12 schools in the East Zone, six in West Zone, and one school in the South Zone. Another 60-70 school buildings need repair.
After the collapse of a BBMP nursery school building in Shivajinagar last month, BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath had sought a report on the building quality of all the schools and colleges that are run by the Palike. The engineers of the quality control department of the BBMP inspected 159 nursery, school and college buildings and found that 19 are in a bad shape and about 60-70 of them need repair.
Several BBMP schools are in pathetic condition. They are 24 schools in the Eastern Zone, 32 in the West, eight in the South Zone, one each in Mahadevpura, Bommanahalli and Rajarajeshwari Nagar zones.
Palike Special Commissioner Preeti Gehlot, said, “According to the report, children of 15-20 schools need to be moved to other buildings as the present buildings are in pathetic condition. We need more time and funds to restore old buildings. Until then, we will shift students to other buildings. The bifurcation of schools and nurseries has not been done, as we just received the report. We will assess the report and take take steps based on it. We will send this report to the BBMP commissioner for further action.”
