1,536 silk sarees worth Rs 16 lakh, cash of Rs 4.9 lakh seized in Dharwad

Over 1,500 silk sarees being transported illegally were seized.

DHARWAD: Election officials have seized 1,536 silk sarees worth Rs 16 lakh which were being transported illegally, at the Kondikoppa checkpost in Annigeri on Tuesday.

The sarees were being transported in a goods vehicle without any proper documents. A team led by the joint commissioner of commercial taxes, Ravikumar, seized the silk sarees.

Masood did not have documents for the cash he was carrying.

Election officials also seized Rs 4,97,600 in cash which was being transported without any documents in a state transport bus, at a checkpost on the national highway near Tegur. The cash was seized from Masood of Chikkamagalur.

The bus was on its way from Nipani to Bhadravathi and the passengers were checked at Tegur when the cash was detected with Masood. He claimed that the cash was related to timber supply to Belagavi and Nipani, but could not furnish supporting documents and hence, the cash was seized.
