BENGALURU: The KR Market police have arrested two individuals for brutally assaulting a woman who was accused of stealing a bundle of 61 sarees at their Maya Silk Sarees store on Avenue Road.

The arrested are Umed Ram (also known as Babu Lal) and his employee Mahendra. The incident, captured on mobile phones, shows the shop owner and his staff kicking and beating the woman on a crowded street.

According to reports, the woman allegedly stole sarees from the store last Saturday. On Sunday, the shop owner waited for her return and, upon seeing her, apprehended her and subjected her to violent assault. They did not let go even after the woman cried out in pain.

Despite the woman’s attempts to file a complaint, the City Market police initially ignored her and instead registered a theft case against her, even jailing her. However, after a video of the incident went viral on social media, sparking outrage among Kannada activists and organisations, the police swiftly registered a case against the shop owner and his employee and sent them into judicial custody.
